Five ways to wear a trench through October

October is the month that defeats most wardrobes. Mornings ask for wool, afternoons take it straight back off, and anything too committed to one temperature spends half the day in your hands. The trench survives this because it was designed for exactly that problem: a light shell that traps warmth when belted and loses it when open.

1. Over knitwear, belted high

Pull the belt one notch tighter than feels natural and sit it above the waistband. The coat blouses slightly at the back, which reads as deliberate rather than borrowed, and a mid-weight crew neck underneath keeps the silhouette from collapsing.

A coat you can wear five ways is worth more than five coats you wear once.

2. Open, with the collar up

The fastest way to make a trench look casual is to stop treating it as tailoring. Leave it unbuttoned, turn the collar, push the sleeves to the forearm and let the hem move. Under it, anything with a visible texture works better than something flat.

3. As the layer over a layer

On the coldest end of the month, a quilted liner jacket underneath adds warmth without bulk at the shoulder. Size up one if you plan to wear it this way through winter.

The last two ways are simple: with tailored trousers and a loafer for work, and over a slip dress with a boot for evening. Both rely on the same thing, which is a coat long enough to finish below the knee.
