Yarn spools in a mill

Hawick has spun wool for two centuries, and the mill we work with still runs frames that are older than most of the people operating them. We went for a morning to see where the yarn in the knitwear range begins.

Why the yarn rests

Freshly spun lambswool holds tension from the frame. Knit it straight away and the garment relaxes unevenly in its first wash. The spinners leave each cone for a fortnight in a humid room, which is why the knits keep their shape.

What it means for you

A crew neck that measures the same in its second winter as it did in the shop. Wash it cold, dry it flat, and it will soften rather than stretch.
